"Did the Upper Great Highway closure make Sunset neighborhood streets less safe? Supervisor Alan Wong claimed it did at a January 8, 2026 press conference, citing a simple year-over-year map comparison of crash data. But my analysis, using the same DataSF crash data with rigorous statistical controls, finds no evidence to support that claim, and if anything, the data suggest the opposite."

I'd like to redirect westside anger toward the fact that most of the transit improvements intended to accompany the highway->park change weren't done.
D4 Mobility Study, 2021: https://www.sfcta.org/projects/district-4-mobility-study#panel-reports-documents
✅ 29-Sunset service increase (slight)
✅ 29 & 28-19th Av speed/reliability quick builds
❌ 28 & 18-46th Av service increase
❌ 18 extension to BART
❌ Express bus Richmond/Sunset <-> north San Mateo co.
Don't close the park. Do add the missing transit. #sfpol #sunsetDunes
Good evening to everyone except this clown car of politicians trying to close the city's third most popular park (and apparently not talking to each other about it)

Outerlands' owner "said that weekend brunch is busier than ever thanks to Sunset Dunes, the new park on the car-free Great Highway a few blocks away."
Who could have guessed? Parks that draw people to the neighborhood are better for business than highways that bypass the neighborhood.
