On January 6th ICE began a full scale attack on Minneapolis. On January 7th they murdered a woman, Renee Nicole Good, they abducted people off the street, broke into homes without warrants, terrorized and attacked a high school. Today they got up and are doing it all again.
The murder happened a few blocks from me, and within a few blocks of the murder of George Floyd. (I know it angers them that they cannot pardon Derek Chauvin.)
The community here has been trying to resist ICE, tracking and observing their actions, trying to warn people when they arrive, trying to hold them accountable to the law. It has been effective in some ways, but not enough. We still try, but in the face of this dramatic escalation I do not know what is next.
These community actions are truly about expressing care for our neighbors. You cannot be around the observers without seeing this. We received a flyer at our house as a blanket offer to anyone who needed support, as many neighbors are truly sheltering in place under this assault. Knowing this community of observers that she belonged to I know she was acting not just out of a sense of anger at the injustice, but compassion, fear, urgency, even desperation as we see an evil descend upon our community.
ICE is a force of evil. They choose a path of evil when they speak and plan for a hundred million deportations, of clearing the country to make room for nativists, when they deport people to concentration camps foreign and domestic, delight in the abuse of their captives. Their souls are dark with hate, led by a man who admits he is going to hell and can only comfort himself in his doom by surrounding himself with his cultivated army of moral corruption.
I am so sad for Renee. For all that she still deserved in her life. I am crying writing this. I do not believe this is the country we deserve. I mean that very seriously, because I think many of us doubt this: we do not deserve this. Even Trump's supporters do not deserve to be subjected to this moral and intellectual corruption. It did not have to be this way, and does not have to be this way.
