#SF #GreatHighway

It's not scientific but today's KTVU poll regarding the Great Highway is running 67% to 21% for entirely reopening the Great Highway entirely to vehicle traffic vs keeping it closed; the remaining 12% voted to reopen it only on weekdays.

Alan Wong, the newly appointed supervisor for the Sunset District, is presenting a proposal today to the Board of Supervisors to reopen the Great Highway on weekdays, which if a majority of the Board approves it, will be put on the ballot for #SF voters to vote on again.

Personally, I don't think that the voters in The City at large understood the impact that the complete closing of the Great Highway would have on the residents of the Sunset &, with the recall & all of the recent publicity surrounding the closure, I think that public opinion across The City has changed & that this proposal likely would pass if the voters are allowed to vote on the matter again.

We'll see . . .

@MLNow #AlanWong is not stupid. Good for him Apparently he wants to get elected following his nomination.

He knows what the majority of the people in the #SunsetDistrict want & it's to reopen the #GreatHighway for daily use & allow it be closed on weekends which is a reasonable compromise, except for those YIMBY people who just moved into the Sunset & who live elsewhere in The City who don't have to deal with the traffic in the area, especially since 19th Ave is now also bogged down with repaving.

@thetonearm ah, ̶S̶o̶u̶l̶ ̶M̶a̶n̶ [edit - see below] was covered by George Benson quite well :) good list, Pigpen did a really good Midnight Hour back in 70 at the Family Dog Great Highway venue

I’d like to ask all the people grousing about the transformation of the #GreatHighway into a car-free park about this virtual freeway cutting through #GoldenGatePark. 💀 indeed. https://pixelfed.social/p/brentsleeper/849045087630738467

Below is a link to an article on the NYT about the "controversy" about the closure of The Great Highway.

I don't live in SF anymore but. when I did, I often used the Great Highway to get to Hwy 1 &/or Skyline Blvd to drive south to the peninsula in order to avoid 19th Ave ( nee Hwy 1).

Back in the 60's you could drive the entire length of 19th Ave from Lincoln all the way past SF State w/o stopping because the signals were timed (they still are, I believe) & traffic was light enough so that you could make all of the lights without stopping.

Those days are long gone!

If I still lived in The City, I'd do everything possible to avoid driving on 19th Ave.

Sunset is an alternative but in order to get to/from there you have to drive thru Golden Gate Park &/or thru the Outer Richmond or Outer Sunset.

So, traffic congestion can only get worse on 19th, Sunset Blvd & the surrounding areas & I'm really glad that I don't live in SF anymore.

This California Highway Is Now a Park. The Cars Are Gone, but Not the Anger.

The transformation of a two-mile stretch of San Francisco’s Great Highway into a pedestrian promenade has set off a clash over the city’s anti-car culture.

I Thought He Came With You
I was moved by this interactive installation on #GreatHighway at Ortega St., in #SanFrancisco’s new #SunsetDunes park. I watched several other people take a stone and speak into the phone. One of the artists was there, cleaning and refreshing the container of stones.
