Remember Comet Lovejoy? In 2011 it skimmed the Sun and survived.
Now Comet MAPS (C/2026 A1) is up next. Since Jan. 13 it’s brightened 5 magnitudes (100×). On April 4 it dives just ~160,000 km above the Sun—inside the corona. That’s bold.
Now 13th magnitude, it’s within reach of mid-sized scopes under dark skies (South favored, some North too)
Will it survive or vaporize?
