Review: BBC Adaptations of Jane Austen are Everywhere.
By everywhere, I mean that they range from being amazing, super period accurate, and (for the most part) true to the book, or they are cringe and almost unwatchable.
When I was on winter break back in December, Mom and I decided that it was a good time to binge watch the BBC adaptations of multiple Jane Austen books since it seems that all of them are free on Amazon Prime. The adaptations that we watched were Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, and Northanger Abbey (I more recently tried to watch Persuasion but was interrupted.) We got through all three in about a week, and it was an interesting experience since they all varied in quality, faithfulness to the books, and overall storytelling.
#1: Pride and Prejudice
Originally, I thought nothing could beat the 2005 adaptation of Pride and Prejudice. Kierra Knightley and Matthew Macfayden were perfect as Elizabeth and Darcy, the cinematography was amazing, and the score is one of the most recognizable scores ever written. I doubted the BBC version could be better.
I was wrong. It was amazing; even better than the 2005 adaptation.
For one thing the BBC did a much better job of achieving historical accuracy. While the 2005 adaptation of Pride and Prejudice tried to make it somewhat accurate, the BBC’s costuming and set design looked like it came straight out of the illustrations in the annotated book. It’s clear that the Brits did everything they could to make it look true to life.
For another thing, the BBC version was able to adapt much more of the book, making the 2005 version feel rushed by comparison. Parts of the book and its nuances that were in part or completely lost in the 2005 movie were fleshed out in the BBC version. With the exception of a few scenes (like Darcy going swimming), the BBC’s faithfulness to the book makes it an almost scene-for-scene adaptation of Jane Austen’s masterpiece.
#2: Sense and Sensibility
Unfortunately, while this version was okay, the 1995 version of Sense and Sensibility with Kate Winslet and Emma Thompson was much better.
The BBC adaptation of this came out in 2008 and you could tell. For one thing, the cinematography and how it followed the plot felt very 2000s. It focused heavily on Marianne and Willoughby’s romance to the detriment of some other plot points as it played up the drama. The opening scene was also Willoughby making out with an anonymous woman, which, while it set up a huge plot point, was unnecessary.
Further, unlike the adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, the historical accuracy wasn’t as good as the 1995 adaptation. The most glaring example of this was Marianne almost constantly having her hair down. While this was acceptable when a woman was in private (i.e. with her family,) it wasn’t acceptable when she was out in public. In the Regency period, if a girl was over 16, she had to wear her hair up as dictated by societal norms.
However, one of the best things about the BBC version of Sense and Sensibility is that it did a much better job of portraying Elinor’s situation with Edward Ferrars, particularly in how Lucy Steele treats her. This version of Lucy is much more uncouth, vindictive, and jealous than the version portrayed in the 1995 adaptation. It was clear that the directors saw that Lucy Steele was a mean-girl and super-jealous-girlfriend type in the book and leaned into that as far as they could, with Lucy constantly reminding Elinor of her relationship with Edward. This tension, though present, was very watered down in the movie, but the BBC did it justice, which honestly made Elinor’s part of the story much more satisfying in this adaptation. We just got to see the full extent of the crap she stoically went through, so when Edward finally breaks up with Lucy and marries Elinor, it’s much more rewarding.
#3: Northanger Abbey
The only adaptation of Northanger Abbey that I’ve seen was the one from 1987 which was done by the BBC (there was another one from PBS that was released in 2007 which I haven’t seen.) This one was very eighties and was absolutely cringe. While it tried to capture the original satire from the book, it failed miserably, in large part from the poor cinematography. The costuming was also terrible, it made the main love interest was unlikable and kinda creepy, and the music was horrible. The only good thing about it was that it at least tried to be accurate to the main plot beats. Other than that, I felt like I was watching an 80’s dark fantasy movie with the same vibes as the cover of a steamy gothic romance novel from the same time period, mixed with Regency England. It was not good.
Until next time,
M.J.
