Craigmount on Cleveden Road in the west of Glasgow. Constructed in the 1880s, it was designed by John Gordon in a Dutch Renaissance style.

Craigmount was built for Gibson Smith of the George Smith and Co. Foundry. Also known as the Sun Foundry, this was one of the great Glasgow architectural and decorative ironwork foundries and they rivalled the better known Saracen Foundry for the quality of their work.

While they never seemed to quite take off in the way Smith intended, many still exist. This is a particularly impressive surviving example, and most are much more simple affairs. While I couldn't find a foundry mark on it, it seems like the type of monument the Sun Foundry would have produced.

Cast iron gravemarkers, like this one in Sighthill Cemetery in Glasgow, were created towards the end of the Victorian era with the aim of making the type of highly ornamented gravestone previously only available to the very rich much more affordable and so more widely available. Many were produced by George Smith's Sun Foundry in the Port Dundas area of the city, and he held several patents for cast-iron grave markers.

The carpet in the former Bridgeton Public Library (now the Glasgow Women's Library) in the East End of the city, featuring the nearby Bridgeton Cross Shelter which was created by the Sun Foundry in 1874. There can't be many other libraries with carpets featuring a local A-listed historic structure!

MacKenzie, a cabinetmaker and upholsterer, was a founding partner in the Sun Foundry and was its primary financier when it was created by George Smith in 1858, which may explain why he was given quite such an ornate cast iron memorial.

The recently restored Alexander MacKenzie memorial in the Glasgow Necropolis. Unlike almost all the other memorials in this Victorian cemetery, the MacKenzie memorial is made from cast iron.

One final shot of the Sun Foundry's Grand Central Fountain in Fountain Gardens in Paisley, this time focussing on one of the somewhat psychedelic walrus heads on its upper level.

A close up of one of the four water-spouting walruses in the Sun Foundry's 1868 Grand Central Fountain in Paisley. Why? Because whose Monday morning isn't improved by the random appearance of a cast-iron Victorian walrus in their timeline!
