Pathetic! 13th century #StructuralEngineers employed by Pope Innocent III in Rome need their arses kicking.

I wonder how many multi story #structures that my colleagues and I in the profession have designed are still standing 800 years later?

(not counting obsolescence and planned demolition of course)

One worker has been critically injured and another was trapped for hours after the tower collapsed while undergoing renovations.

First up (for today), building a #choropleth of the active licensed #structuralengineers in the U.S. A linear hue scaling of # of SEs makes a pretty boring map. California dwarfs basically all other states. I'm thinking I might need to normalize the data with pop density.

#dataviz #aec #maps

Back in December, I compiled the data for all of the partial practice (AK, CA, GA, NV, OK, OR, UT, WA) and full practice (IL, HI) states, and post-processed all duplicate licenses to determine what the actual population of licensed #structuralengineers is in the U.S.

*Sigh* I *really* try to not exist in an echo chamber when it comes to the #builtenvironment, but all signs point to there being a fundamental disconnect between where I see the #AEC industry and where it could be headed vs. the industry itself.

I’ve had yet another abstract related to helping #structuralengineers apply practical programming concepts in their daily work rejected from a #AEC #design practitioner’s conference. 🧵

(Workshop was “Open Source Software within Design Engineering Practice”, so I’m sorry I won’t get to spread the #python love and help #structuralengineers migrate from spreadsheets as the word of God)
After this #dataviz got dragged through the mud on @[email protected] (someone posted a link to their PhD to establish that #bridge age is a useless metric), I think I'll stick to cat photos 🤦. There's nothing quite like one-upmanship among #structuralengineers
Evidently parts of the NY professional organization website hasn't been updated since 2009, and it SHOWS. I don't think many people are looking up #structuralengineers and #engineers using the yellow pages...🤦‍♀️
*wringing hands* People leave because low compensation/high stress—> well, we don’t get paid enough as consultants to pay more!—> how do we get paid more as #structuralengineers? —> we can’t control our pay because capitalism / competition—> it all sucks! *general agreement*
