Iran Announces Strike on USS Abraham Lincoln
The Iranian military said its naval forces targeted the US aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln with missile fire, claiming the strike forced the vessel to withdraw from the area.
According to Iranian statements carried by Al Mayadeen on Wednesday, the operation involved launching missiles from coastal positions toward the carrier at sea. Iranian officials described the move as part of their ongoing response to US-Israeli military actions in the region.
Iran also linked the operation to previous attacks on the same carrier. On March 13, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said the USS Abraham Lincoln had sustained significant damage in a combined missile and drone strike, claiming it was forced to retreat following that attack.
Iranian officials have repeatedly stated that US naval assets, including aircraft carriers, are among their primary targets as part of a broader campaign against US military presence and Israeli-linked operations.
IRGC Expands Attacks on US Military Infrastructure
The reported strike on the aircraft carrier came alongside continued Iranian operations targeting US military facilities across the region.
The IRGC said its naval forces carried out coordinated missile and drone attacks targeting the headquarters of the US Fifth Fleet in Mina Salman, Bahrain.
According to the group, the operation was conducted in two waves using a combination of ballistic and cruise missiles, as well as loitering drones.
Iran said the strikes targeted multiple installations within the base, including counter-drone systems, maintenance facilities, fuel storage tanks, and areas used to assemble remotely operated vessels.
The IRGC said the attacks were carried out with “high precision,” as part of ongoing operations against US military assets in response to the war.
Operational Strain
Separately, a fire aboard the US aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford has exposed mounting strain on US naval operations in the region.
According to a New York Times report, the fire broke out last week and took more than 30 hours to extinguish.
“It took more than 30 hours for sailors to put out the fire aboard the aircraft carrier Gerald R. Ford last week, sailors and military officials said, as the beleaguered ship continued its monthslong slog through President Trump’s military operations”, according to the report.
The incident left more than 600 service members without beds, forcing sailors to sleep on floors and tables, while also disrupting basic onboard services, including laundry and sanitation systems.
Dozens of crew members reportedly suffered smoke inhalation, while two sustained “non-life-threatening injuries”.
“The ship, along with its 4,500 sailors and fighter pilots, was in the Mediterranean on Oct. 24 when Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth ordered it to steam to the Caribbean to add weight to President Trump’s pressure campaign on Nicolás Maduro, Venezuela’s leader before his seizure,” the New York Times reported.
However, it was “rushed to the Middle East” following the US-Israeli aggression on Iran on February 28.
According to the report, “the Ford is now entering its 10th month of deployment.”
Crew members, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, told the Times that “their deployment will probably be extended into May, which would put them at an entire year at sea, twice the length of a normal aircraft carrier deployment.”
