Section of a Roman column repurposed as a guard stone (chasse-roue) to keep horse-drawn carts from scraping the building. In 1660 the bronze doors of Roman Curia in the Forum were moved to the basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano. The addition of stars was a nod to Pope Alexander VII and the Chigi family.
