The city of #DemingNM will allow off-highway vehicles on city roads. On its second try, the Deming City Council passed an ordinance tonight. It came down to a tie broken by Mayor Benny Jasso.

As recently as 2018, the city opposed this, but has done a 180 as enthusiasm grows.

But a retired police chief who is now on the council was having none of it.

Deming will allow off-highway vehicles on city roads

A divided city council narrowly approved an ordinance opening city roads to side-by-side vehicles.

Deming's mayor and city administrator both seemed taken aback when a proposed ordinance allowing off-highway vehicles on city roads, which was expected to pass, died at city council without even coming to a vote.

A leading advocate for #sidebysides in the city blames rogue drivers at a time when the #DemingNM police department is stretched thin.

However, the process involves procedural steps and a logistical knot. The state has allowed municipalities to authorize recreational off-highway vehicles, or ROVs, on local paved or dirt roads since 2016. Besides local advocacy, the city …

After allegations of fraudulent billing for municipal water, the city of #DemingNM held a town hall to educate the public about Neptune water meters and how bills are prepared. (An independent is also moving forward, and the State Auditor is examining the complaints as well.)

The city also unveiled its plans to allow off-road vehicles on city streets, a reversal of its position just four years ago.
