Genpin lived a humble life. He was showered with titles and wealth after helping emperors Kanmu (桓武天皇 735-806) and Heizei (平城天皇 773-824) to recover from sickness, but refused the titles and gave his wealth to charity.

🔍THE SPY'S RETREAT🕵️
Shisen-dō (詩仙堂) lays hidden behind a thicket of trees and bamboo, flanking the old Shirakawa Road as it climbs steeply into the foothills of Higashiyama.
This was the retreat of Ishikawa Jōzan (石川丈山 1583-1672), an Edo period intellectual and (maybe) spy.

Our last full day in Kyoto! After waking up at the Hyatt Place Kyoto, we visited Enko-ji and Shisen-do. We also made a late lunch reservation for Kani Doraku's nearby location. After, we ended the day with a visit to the Shinto Shimogamo-jinja.
