Sen. Jeanne Shaheen will not seek reelection in New Hampshire

Democrats in Washington are trying to sound optimistic following Democratic Sen. Jeanne Shaheen's announcement she won't seek reelection in New Hampshire in 2026. Sen. Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut says by the time the next election occurs the “picture on the ground looks very favorable for Democrats.” But Republicans have responded to Shaheen’s decision with glee. Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina leads the Senate Republican campaign arm and writes on X that Shaheen’s departure “is welcome news.” Shaheen said Wednesday she's “made the difficult decision not to seek reelection” next year. Republicans hold 53 Senate seats compared with the Democrats’ 47, including two independents who caucus with Democrats.
