In recent years, White Cliffs - a town in outback New South Wales that began as an opal-mining settlement in the 1880s - has experienced a minor renaissance with new families moving into the town's dugout homes and increasing tourist attraction.

Sonya Hyland, seen in this photograph on her treadmill, is one of the newcomers and has recently bought her own dugout. "I was travelling through the outback, and I stopped here for a weekend and kept extending," she says.
