⛰️ La Via Vandelli
🇬🇧 -> A historical route full of stories, legends on which you can still hear the sound of the hooves of the merchants' donkeys or the mothers' bare feet who walked this road to exchange salt from the navy for flour from the Po Valley.
Construction of the Via Vandelli began in 1738: the road would be declared finished in 1751, due to problems with the War of Austrian Succession, which forced Francesco III d'Este, duke of Modena, to temporarily leave his possessions. It was taken care of by Abbot Domenico Vandelli, court cartographer and mathematician. The road, on the Apuan side, known as Finestra Vandelli was constructed by the use of explosives, while the steepest sections of the mountain were built with drystone walls and workers whom Vandelli called from Piedmont. The route was not what it should have been; the excessive gradients and numerous hairpin bends, together with the fact that in winter it remained covered by snow, made it little more than a mule track unsuitable for the passage of wheeled vehicles and, in addition, it was also infested with brigands.
🇮🇹 -> Un percorso storico ricco di storie, leggende su cui senti ancora il rumore degli zoccoli degli asini dei mercanti o dei piedi scalzi delle mamme che percorrevano questa via a scambiare il sale della marina con la farina della padania.
La costruzione della via Vandelli inizia nel 1738: la strada verrà dichiarata conclusa nel 1751, per problemi legati alla guerra di successione austriaca che costrinse "Francesco III d'Este" duca di Modena a lasciare momentaneamente i suoi possedimenti. Ad occuparsene fu l’abate Domenico Vandelli, cartografo e matematico di corte. La via, nella parte apuana, noto come Finestra Vandelli venne realizzatqa mediante l'uso dell’esplosivo, mentre i tratti più ripidi della montagna vennero costruiti con muri a secco e maestranze che Vandelli chiamò dal Piemonte. La via non fu quello che avrebbe dovuto essere, le pendenze eccessive ed i numerosi tornanti, insieme al fatto che in inverno rimaneva coperta dalla neve la resero poco più di una mulattiera inadatta al passaggio di veicoli a ruota ed, inoltre, fu anche infestata dai briganti.
