@dalfen this is how the #iran #Iraq war of 1980s extended from "three day operation" to eight years of bloody stalemate. Iraq made quick gains and invaded parts of iran (iran was extremely weak, coming out of revolution with defections from military, executions ...etc). then for the following eight years, iraq did all it can (including attacking #israel) to try to convince iran to a cease fire. #khomenie refused, insisting on getting the head of #saddam_hussein as a price for cease fire (cont..)
@KimPerales one major miscalculation with #Trump is the assumption that he can "stop" the war anytime he wants. this was the same exact assumption #saddam_hussein did almost 50 years ago with #iran . after the initial victories of ceasing some Iranian territories, the counter attacks came, and the war stalled after few months. for the following 8 years, #Iraq was trying to find a way out to stop the war, including trying to provoke #Israel to sell "an islamic alliance" with #iran ...etc. (cont)
@alan you're definitely not the only one who sees that. the problem I guess is in those who are in actual power, thinking "this time it's different". the current war can be aligned almost one-to-one with #iran/#iraq war 1980s (the actual 1st gulf war). back then, #saddam_hussein was the mighty man of the gulf, iran just had an islamic revolution while having broken institutions, weakened military ...etc. it should've been a "walk in the park" for #iraq. took 8 years and zero inch gained.
