Collective Defence is a way of mitigating the harms done by the state in criminalizing protestors.
✊🏻 ✊🏼 ✊🏽 ✊🏾 ✊🏿

Background:
The state will always seek to maintain the status quo and break the back of progressive movements.

The favoured way of doing this is by picking off individuals at a collective action, brutalizing and terrorizing them, then arresting and traumatizing them, with the hope of instilling fear in others.

For instance:

This past Saturday, multiple people were sent to the hospital, 6 people were needlessly detained, with two actually being charged.

TPS officers 🐷 are on film holding people's arms, then sweeping their legs out from under them, causing them to faceplant into the cement and streetcar tracks.

One was knocked unconscious by this process, after which you can see the 🐖🐖🐖 flopping them around like a ragdoll.

The Cruelty IS The Point.

In isolation, people who have not been prepared for state violence and arrest are often convinced to accept ludicrous conditions for release and plea "deals" — even when they have lawyers.

For those who *don't* remember the Poll Tax riots, it was when Thatcher (UK Conservative PM at the time) tried to implement a flat tax, such that a multi-millionaire would pay the same as a dustman.

People refused to pay it.

The opposition Labour leader said people shouldn't be "exploited by Toy Town revolutionaries who pretend that the tax can be stopped and the government toppled by non-payment."

A 200,000 person march in London became a riot after the police cavalry-charged the protestors.

Thatcher was pushed out of power and the Poll Tax scrapped.

Star Trek is well known for its on-screen diversity. In TOS: "The Ultimate Computer," viewers were introduced Richard Daystrom (played by William Marshall) to the world. A genius scientist and inventor, the character of Daystrom inspired many Black viewers to pursue the sciences.

This episode was aired 1968, and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr would be assassinated almost exactly one month later.

Then a week after the assassination, somehow (*cough* #riotswork *cough*), the Civil Rights Act of 1968 was passed.

So #representationmatters . Media is sometimes a reflection of reality, and sometimes reality is a reflection of media. IMHO, there is too much #cyberpunk dystopia and fascist-friendly media, not enough #anarchist and #solarpunk media. #startrek is pretty good though 🖖
