Day 168: Mom's Roses ๐น๐น๐น
๐๐๐๐๐ข ๐๐๐๐
My mom was able to visit me once in Wales before she passed away. On that visit she saw the sorry state of my front garden and got straight to work sorting it out. As I helped (?) her weed to prepare the area for her gardening genius, she noticed me yanking the crap out of a nasty, thin, thorny, brown bit of nothing. I heard her screech 'Nooooo!' just a tad too late. I turned around slowly with the weed clenched in my grubby fist, bits of dirt flaking to the ground from the clump on the tangled mess of roots at the bottom. She looked at me and for a millisecond I'm sure I saw some harrowing thoughts flash behind her eyes. No doubt she wondered how she, the Goddess of the Garden, had a daughter with a thumb as black as mine. It passed quickly and in her kindest, most gentle voice (as one would talk to a small child of diminished capacity) she said 'That's a rose bush.' I immediately responded in just about the least helpful way possible by replying 'Fuck off! It's not.' Somehow she miraculously looked past the fact that I had cursed AND the fact that I was a dumb as a box of bricks when it came to gardening.
She took my 'weed' from me, cleaned it off ever so gently, and planted it in the corner of my garden with fresh soil and lots of water. I was still pretty convinced that she was taking great care with a thorny weed but who was I to argue when she was fixing up my garden and loving it?
So here we are almost 18 years later and each year I have glorious roses in the early summer and they remind me of the woman who knew how to love the thorny weeds of the world until they blossomed.
