My character Ray Gracey as the “Dark and Spooky”, an original tiki cocktail inspired the classic Dark and Stormy!
For his drink, I wanted to riff on a classic southern cocktail to match the small town southern horror vibe of Ray's story, so I chose the Dark and Stormy. I exchanged the lime for blood orange to give it a spooky twist, as well as adding the black lava salt to make it visually striking. The colors in the cocktail, before it’s stirred, match Ray’s fur colors. The tobacco bitters and smoke reference Ray’s smoking habit. The oak chips used in the smoking gun conjure up the image of the haunted moss draped oak trees of the south. I wanted to give the drink a bit of a tiki vibe as well, to complement his rockabilly aesthetic.
Recipe:
Oak Smoking Chips
1/2 oz honey simple syrup
2 oz dark rum
5 oz ginger beer
2 dashes tobacco bitters
1 blood orange
Black lava salt
Rim a high ball glass with the black lava salt.
Fill the glass with ice.
Cut the blood orange into wedges, squeeze the juice of 1 wedge into the glass, save the others for garnish.
Add 2 oz of rum, 2 dashes of tobacco bitters, 1/4 oz honey simple syrup, and 5 oz of ginger beer to glass.
Add the blood orange garnish and stir.
Ignite the chips in a smoking gun and gently blow smoke into the glass, use a small grilling plank or coaster to trap the smoke.
Allow the cocktails to sit for several minutes before releasing the smoke.
Stir and cheers!
