Today we had a big group in our beginner tango class. It was great to see so many new faces and dance with so many new people! And then after the practica, we had guest teachers Erin Malley & Doruk Golcu teaching us about making nice, smooth turns, at a speed that keeps it comfortable for both leader and follower.

Yesterday we worked on our walks in the beginner class. Most of us yesterday’s group has actually been doing this a while, but it’s always good to return to the basics and shore up our foundations.

We thought about how we project, transfer weight, and collect, maintaining our hips level both side-to-side and front-to-back. We tried to keep our weight forward over the arches of our feet, knees relaxed, not tilting our ankles too far to either side. We worked on giving our arms and backs enough muscle tone to communicate well without being rigid. We thought about controlling that tone to convey “stop” when we wanted just a projection or a partial weight transfer.

After the práctica, we had our techniques class. We reviewed sacadas on front ochos and did exercises on elastically changing the distance within the embrace, so we can apply that to the sacada.

And we had a visitor who lives far from any major cities so rarely gets a chance to dance tango!

Join the DC Queer Tango Collective and the Cultural Arts Center and Visual and Performing Arts Department of Montgomery College for a night of social tango dancing, with live tango music! We'll get started with a beginners' queer tango dance class at 7pm, followed by dancing from 8 to 11:30pm. Everyone is welcome to our queer-centered space. We gather to celebrate, in joy and community, and we dance to honor those who have fought for, and continue to fight for, safe and inclusive dance spaces. DJ Alicia Michelle will spin the tango tunes, and we will be joined by tango music duo Arco & Aire, Heyni Solera on bandoneon and Max Wollam-Fisher on the cello.

Everything is free of charge and will take place at the beautiful Dance Studio (CU205) of the Montgomery College Takoma Park Campus, 7995 Georgia Avenue, Silver Spring, Maryland.

The Filipeli twins were given a challenge by the organizers of Conexion Queer Tango Festival: dance with a third person in the mix, Leonardo Sardella.

For reference, at the World Tango Championships in 2019, the Filipeli twins took 3rd place in tango escenario, which is the highest any non-traditional couple has ever ranked in tango.

Georgia was out today, so instead of 1hr each of beginner/practica/technique, we did 1.5hr of beginner class followed by 1.5hr of practica.

As a reminder, these are free, community-run classes at Montgomery College in Silver Spring every Saturday 1:30-4:30.
