Oh look at the time! A time to rant about sub par Stern coil stops again!

Somewhere around 2019 Stern made a huge batch of bad coil stops, which went into a lot of pins manufactured at time, including games like Jurassic Park, Elvira's House of Horrors and many later games. Some owners had this part disintegrate in just couple of weeks in their freshly unboxed factory new game. What we got as replacements was more of the same.

Buying this specific part became a crap shoot after that. It looks visually exactly like the previous ones that would take years and years of use and only get retired when they were literally beaten to pulp. Some parts sellers even made their own 3rd party versions of this because the OG Stern part was just going to give them unhappy customers.

After all these years, I'm still finding these in my games, I have 10 games that use them. I however discovered the older variant of this part fits just fine and can be found NOS.

Sigh, still finding these fine pieces of coil stops. I thought all of my Sterns already used 3rd party parts but no.

For the uninitiated, this is a coil stop, a part that stops solenoid movement in a pinball machine. It takes quite a beating but are normally really robust stuff. Stern pinball inc. however found a way to enshittify them and now a 5+ years lasting part dies in months at times.

So my friend bought a MacBook Pro M4. They noticed large grey spots near the edges of the screen at high brightness. That's not cool for a 2k EUR device that advertises its magnificent display, so they visit the local apple store. The resident genius (does Apple still call them that?) listens to my friend, glances at the screen and says immediately "yes, i see it." They also tell my friend that they also own that model.So the two go and take a look at the other M4 Pro models and EVERY SINGLE ONE in the Apple Store has the same issue. Which makes it expected behavior and NOT an issue that leads to replacement. The genius is horrified and mumbles "thanks for nothing" at my friend when they leave the store.
