This map from iNaturalist showing sightings of Tīeke (#Philesturnus rufusater) North Island Saddleback maps pretty well to locations where islands have been cleared of predators or where predator-proof fences and intensive trapping have been done.

Predator Free — stories that engage

Nikki MacDonald’s front page story in The Post today, ‘Hunters on the trail of Miramar stoat’, is a great example of the sort of story that I keep my s...

This has been amazing… things are so advanced that the article doesn’t even mention possums.. 500% on the piwakwaka? They must be all round my place. And i didnt know the traps had auto #mayonnaise dispensers.. could use one of them at sandwich time. It basically just leaves cats 🫤 - which are great for cuddles not hunting.

@beebrookshire an interesting look at changing attitudes. The case of New Zealand cat lovers is an interesting one, especially when you factor in the #PredatorFree movement. In general I would say most Kiwis are in favour, but there's the uneasy knowledge, pushed to the back of their minds that their sweet moggy is a vicious killing machine…

Very interesting and controversial.

An overabundance of non-native birds in a #predatorfree Waikato wetland sanctuary endangers the water quality.

Waikato sanctuary using rats to solve its bird poo problem

A Waikato wetland sanctuary is reintroducing rats to try to drive out birds fouling a prized lake. The move is a last resort to try to scare off half a million sparrows and starlings that have found a safe spot to roost overnight around pest-free  Lake Rotopiko. National Wetland Trust executive officer Karen Denyer says the non-native birds poo so much they are changing the ecosystem and endangering the water quality. She spoke to Corin Dann.

Heat map shows where rats have been detected in our community predator control bait station program Spring 2022. Brighter colours more rats. Way less than last year. More birds are flourishing.
