Before I started birding, I had no idea what pied meant. The only time I had ever heard it used was in the context of the Pied Piper, and in all those nursery rhymes and fairy tales pies seem to figure prominently. There are black birds coming out of them or someone is off to see the pie man, So I just figured it had something to do with pastry. Maybe that was how he got the children to follow him. Anyway, turns out it just means made up of two or more colours, usually black and white in the bird world. This Pied Bushchat is a perfect example. Black yes, white yes, pies no.
