Representatives from Philips TV & Sound, Muirhead and Nirvana discussed how designers and manufacturers of consumer electronics can work more sustainably in this live talk as part of a collaboration between Dezeen and Philips TV & Sound.

The talk was the last in a series of four by Dezeen and Philips TV & Sound inviting designers from different disciplines to explore the cutting edge of product design.

Stefan van Sabben, global corporate social responsibility and sustainability manager at Philips TV & Sound

The live talk was moderated by Dezeen's deputy editor Cajsa Carlson, and investigated current trends in sustainability and consumer electronics, as well as how circularity can be achieved in manufacturing processes, and why brands and their supply chains need to produce products that are built to last.

Muirhead and Nirvana have both worked with Philips TV & Sound on sustainability initiatives. Kubrak consulted the brand to develop a list of principles that would enable it to use more sustainable packaging, while Muirhead provides sustainable leather that is used in some of Philips TV & Sound's products.

Van Sabben has been working as a corporate social responsibility (CSR) and sustainability expert for 10 years. He is a member of Philips TV & Sound's environmental, social and governance taskforce, and also chairs the company's CSR and sustainability steering committee, which encourages its heads of departments to focus on topics like circularity and external sustainability reporting.

Prior to working at Philips TV & Sound, he acted as sustainability and strategy manager at Ernst and Young for five years, advising large corporations on how to make their practices more sustainable.

The case study is titled How to design a beautiful TV and is the third in a series of four talks by Dezeen and Philips TV & Sound inviting designers from different disciplines to explore the cutting edge of product design.

Philips TV & Sound is represented on the panel by its chief design officer Rod White. Stine Find Osther, vice president of design at Danish textile brand Kvadrat, will also appear on the panel alongside Andy Kerr, director of product marketing at British audio brand Bowers & Wilkins.

The discussion will cover the challenges of incorporating premium materials into the design of consumer electronics, as well as what the future holds for the design of technology in the home.

Rod White, chief design officer at Philips TV & Sound

In his role at Philips TV & Sound, an arm of the electronics brand Philips which designs and produces television and audio products, White is responsible for the company's design strategy and direction and leads its design studios in Amsterdam, Taipei and Shenzhen.

Bowers & Wilkins' audio equipment is used in Apple Stores around the world, as well as George Lucas’s Skywalker Sound studio and London's Abbey Road recording studio. Its speakers are additionally installed in a number of Jaguar, Maserati and Volvo car models.

Watch our live talk on women in product design with Philips TV & Sound

A panel of leading women in product design will discuss their experience of working in the field in this live talk produced by Dezeen for Philips TV & Sound. Watch live from 2pm London time.

Philips TV & Sound will be represented on the panel by its senior lead designer Lisa Grahner. Pernilla Johansson, chief design officer at Swedish appliance manufacturer Electrolux, also appears on the panel, alongside Joerka Koenders, founder of her eponymous design and branding consultancy.

The talk will be moderated by Dezeen's deputy editor Cajsa Carlson, and will explore the challenges that women in the field of product design face as well as how gender parity in the industry can be improved.

Titled Women in Product Design, the talk is the second in a series of four by Dezeen and Philips TV & Sound exploring issues at the cutting edge of the industry.

According to a survey undertaken by US professional organisation AIGA and Google in 2016, women account for 44 per cent of the design workforce worldwide, and earn an average of six per cent less than their male counterparts. Meanwhile, not-for-profit consultancy Creative Equals states that only 17 per cent of creative directors worldwide are women.

A 2018 report by Design Council found that men account for 95 per cent of the product and industrial design workforce in the UK, despite the fact that 63 per cent of the country's art and design students are women.

Lisa Grahner, senior lead designer at Philips TV & Sound

In her role as senior lead designer at Philips TV & Sound, Grahner develops the brand's product ranges including televisions, monitors, headphones and audio products.

She previously worked at Marcel Wanders Studio in Amsterdam, where she designed products for brands including Moooi, KLM, Cappellini, Magis, and Louis Vuitton.

Grahner is also the founder of her own eponymous product design practice, through which she has designed furniture for Los Angeles design firm Mashstudios.

Pernilla Johansson, chief design officer at Electrolux

Johansson is chief design officer at Electrolux, where she leads a team of 200 designers. She joined the brand in 2008 as head of design for its major appliances division in the Asia Pacific region, before moving to Sweden in 2014 to lead its global home care and small domestic appliances division.

Prior to joining Electrolux, Johansson acted as the head of Philips Design Singapore. She holds a master's degree in industrial design from the University of Gothenburg in Sweden, and has also worked at design consultancies in the Netherlands, France and the US.

Joerka Koenders, design and branding consultant

Koenders founded design and branding consultancy Joerka in 1999 after graduating from the Institute for Fashion, Management and Design at the Hogeschool van Amsterdam.

Through this practice, she works as a consultant in areas including brand strategy, trend forecasting and CMF (colour, materials and finish) design with clients including Philips TV & Sound, Vodafone, Renault and Amsterdam's Hotel de l’Europe.

This talk follows the first part of Dezeen's collaboration with Philips TV & Sound, What is European Design.

Mary Arnold-Forster, founder of Mary Arnold-Forster Architects

Arnold-Forster is an architect specialising in creating sustainable homes in remote locations across Scotland.

She set up her own practice in 2016 after 16 years at Dualchas Architects, where she worked on remote homes throughout the highlands and islands of the west coast of Scotland.

Her practice has created a home on the Isle of Sky clad in black tin to emulate a traditional Scottish blackhouse and recently used planks of burnt larch to clad a cross-laminated timber house in the Scottish Highlands.
