RSPCA Cymru braced for summer rise in stray snake reports
RSPCA Cymru is warning of a seasonal spike in stray snake sightings, as warmer temperatures prompt a rise in reptile-related incidents across Wales and England.
New data released ahead of National Snake Day (16 July) shows that snake reports peak during July, August and September. Last summer, the charity received 383 reports during that period alone—an 18% increase compared to 2023. In total, 982 snake-related calls were logged in 2024, with 267 involving loose or stray snakes.
In Wales, 25 incidents were reported last year, down from 37 in 2023. The counties with the highest number of calls were Cardiff (5), Flintshire (3) and Swansea (3).
RSPCA senior scientific officer Evie Button said snakes are “excellent escape artists” and become more active in hot weather. “Last year, we took almost one thousand reports about snakes – more than in 2023 – with the highest number of calls coming in during the summer months,” she said. “The RSPCA urges all pet snake owners to be extra vigilant at this time of year, invest in an enclosure suitable for the particular species and make sure that enclosure is kept secure – and locked if necessary – when unattended.”
The charity also highlighted the risks of taking snakes outdoors for sunlight exposure. While natural light is beneficial, snakes can warm up and move quickly, increasing the risk of escape.
Evie Button said many of the snakes collected by officers are escaped pets, but some are native species—such as grass snakes or adders—mistaken for exotic animals. “Sadly, we also deal with a lot of abandoned pet snakes,” she said. “We find that many people are unaware of how much of a commitment these animals are when they take them on, which we believe contributes to the concerning number of animals every year who have sadly been abandoned when their owners can no longer meet their needs.”
The RSPCA is urging prospective reptile owners to thoroughly research species-specific care requirements before adopting. Snakes rely entirely on their owners for appropriate heating, lighting, feeding and habitat conditions. Without proper care, they can suffer from serious illness, injury or death.
It is illegal to release or allow to escape any species not native to the UK. If a snake is found and believed to be a pet, the public is advised to keep a safe distance and consult the RSPCA’s website for guidance.
