This is a fairly standard Cantonese style steamed fish that’s gotten popular recently on socials.

Really easy to pull together on a week night. As with any steamed fish, fresh is best. If you don’t plan on cooking it the same day you buy, just buy frozen.

When I’m craving a healthy meal, I don’t think of a salad or a protein burrito made with Carb Balance tortilla.

I think of steamed whole striped bass and a simple side of garlic stir fried snow pea leaves.

Fresh ingredients are key here. The fish is rubbed with plum sauce and soy sauce, topped with sliced ginger, and accompanied by egg tofu.

ĺą´çł• (Nian Gao) is a traditional glutinous rice snack eaten around Chinese New Year.

A mix of glutinous rice flour, sugar, and starch is steamed for about an hour. We also added Pandan and coconut milk to this one for fun.

The result is something like a hard mochi. It’s usually served pan fried so you get a crispy outside with a slightly chewy, gooey inside.

As requested, Valentine’s dinner this year is a humble bowl of Japanese curry rice.

Instant pot turned out to be a poor choice. The roux didn’t mix in well without the boiling. But I made it work.

Thrown together while half comatose, but craving kimchi again so I had to pull it together.

Kimchi Jigae with thin sliced pork belly, onions, silken tofu, shrimp, and a huge portabella cap sliced long and thin. Didn’t have green onions so sprinkled in some parsley for color.

A touch of mirin adds mild sweetness that really brightens up the savory heat of the dish.

Kimchi jakgokbap (multigrain) fried rice after a round of samgyeopsal (pork belly) on a kbbq pan over an open fire while #camping this weekend.

I generally refrain from cooking over open flame because of the soot clean up after but this setup wasn’t too bad!

Wife didn’t care much for the jakgokbap. She prefers white rice. I don’t blame her.

Pot roast for dinner.

Fun fact, I first learned about slow cooked pot roast from a family I lived with in Wisconsin during an internship.

I woke up one day and saw the “dad” dumping all kinds of random stuff into a slow cooker at 9am in the morning. He said it was for dinner and I thought he was crazy.

Super comforting on a cold winter evening though.

Never had anything like it growing up in Singapore.

Dinner yesterday. Kentang pork and garlic stir fried choy sum tips.

Kentang just means “potato” in Indonesian.

It’s a really simple family recipe that my grandma cooked back in Indonesia. It’s a predominantly Muslim country so it was probably a dish only Chinese-Indos made.

I have no idea. But kinda interesting to think about.
