First time I came to this fest my big discovery was Nora Brown. That was 6 years ago, she must've been 13 or 14, still playing as "Little" Nora Brown.
I cringe at the idea of a "prodigy" and she doesn't really fit that bill. Not a Fleck level banjo player, doesn't have a knockout voice, doesn't even write her own music. But she's a prodigy, no doubt, a type I don't think I've experienced otherwise. Whatever "flashy" means, she's the exact opposite. Hers is a quiet that just had a packed house stay silent and lean in to listen, to listen and to feel. Her prodigy is one of realness, of honesty, of depth. It's remarkable. The story goes that her parents took her for ukukule lessons, as many a parent has done, and some switch in her DNA flipped on and here we are.
She'll never be a huge star, but she's something special. She's changed the way I think about "talent" and what I'm looking to get out of music. Always a treat to see her at the BFF.

Back for the eve session and very excited for this Nora Brown set. First discovered her at this fest 5 years ago and have been a big fan since. And also, I don't think she's even 20 years old quite yet. She's both a Brooklyn teenager and an old soul from deep Appalachia, and something special. If you're into sparse, dark old Appalachian folk at all, you should get acquainted. Taking this church and the packed house back in time.
