#Banjofriday is travelling today to see #NoraBrown live in NL on Saturday.

Maybe you watch Huston West in the meantime.

Huston West - Cobb County (Live Banjo)

One thing I was timid about for the bluegrass jam this week was that my #banjo is a #Washburn (Oscar Schmidt OB5, ~$400 new) and it is a good banjo, but it's intimidating bringing it into the same space as Gibson, Deering, etc. banjos, but it held up just fine. I'm not saying it's on par with the others, but that it didn't matter that it wasn't. It played and sounded good enough to do the job and it's as good as it needs to be for me to appreciate it.
"Went to the swamp to play my swampiest song. I had a chorus of frogs singing with me at the end.

"This is an original song called Odessa's Haunt. It's a #DnD track I wrote for one of my friends' D&D characters, Odessa. She's a beautiful, elegant #tiefling who came from a stinky, boggy marsh. I tried to capture that element by playing major chords over minor tuning, like one trying to hide something ugly with something beautiful." #banjo

It is possible to fall into a huge #rabbithole when researching historical #banjo players from the 19th century. One of the most productive ones was Frank Buchanan Converse, sometimes called the "father of the banjo", which of course he was not. But he wrote many books and methods for playing the banjo, that are still relevant and fascinating today on #BanjoFriday

Played my #banjo tonight at a local bluegrass jam. I've been playing banjo for a decade now but this was my first time doing something like that with it. I'm very "back porch trained" when it comes to my banjo. While it was painfully obvious to me at least that I'm nowhere remotely close to my competency on a guitar, I still had fun, and I'm declaring it mission accomplished on that basis.
I've been fully back on my #banjo shenanigans lately.

@lowqualityfacts

Beethoven never once used a #ukulele in one of his symphonies: he preferred the #banjo.

Musically COMPLETELY unrelated: Today the magic Magic Tuber Stringband relesed their new album "Heavy Water" on Thrill Jockey. The trio has not just one, but two #banjo players and here a third one as a guest, who is delegated to do tape loops on the album.

I love them, you will do so as well!

Happy #Banjofriday to all!

A month ago I visited a glorious open air #Karaoke event in Cologne which will happen again tomorrow (May 23 2026, see link). One of the songs someone selected is a singalong classic that is extremely popular in German speaking countries. I felt inspired to adapt it for #clawhammer #banjo and here's the recording of the first time I managed to play through it without too many errors. (Still learning to play ...)
