New dot hatched today. #PlayPeridot #Niantic

Ces jeux connaissent mieux vos habitudes que vos compagnes, know it.

@doodlebrink it was pretty clear that #niantic wanted to use those data for commercial purposes. However, in articles published in the last decade, the focus was rather on augmented reality: see e.g. https://kotaku.com/the-creators-of-pokemon-go-mapped-the-world-now-theyre-1838974714 (2019) or https://www.forbes.com/sites/yehongzhu/2016/07/29/how-niantic-is-profiting-off-tracking-where-you-go-while-playing-pokemon-go/ (2016)
The Creators Of Pokémon Go Mapped The World. Now They're Mapping You

Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, the latest game from the company behind Pokémon Go, lets players harness the magic of their childhood to combat monsters and collect shimmering digital artifacts across their local neighborhoods. Niantic’s apps certainly encourage gamers to get outdoors and get active, but behind the scenes, Wizards Unite is quietly casting another spell: collecting a surprising amount of data about where you go.

“[Niantic Spatial]’s latest product is a model that it says can pinpoint your location on a map to within a few centimeters, based on a handful of snapshots of the buildings or other landmarks in view. The firm wants to use it to help robots navigate with greater precision in places where GPS is unreliable.”

@cyberlyra

How many folks gave their #consent to train these systems?

Does #Niantic understand consent? Do they care?
