I have opinions about mens' hats.
I bought my first non-baseball hat, non-knit hat, when I was in high school. It was a flat cap, in a gorgeous, silky brown pigskin. I would love to buy this hat again. Alas, I have never found its like again.
Out of 2000 kids in my school, I may have been the only one in a flat cap. Morons gave me shit about it. Then, by the time I was 22, I was bald, and a hat wasn't so much a style choice as a priority. (In the last 40 years or so, I rarely go out uncovered, yet the dermatologist freezes or slices a piece off my pate almost ever 6 months.)
Here's my opinion: A flat cap can be a dignified, useful, or sporty accessory. The very similar newsboy cap is only suitable for children, stunning actresses hiding a zit (see "Love, Actually") or for comedic affect ala Curly Howard of the Three Stooges, when golfing.
(A newsboy hat has 6 or 8 triangular panels the come together at the top of the head with a cloth-covered button, similar to a baseball cap.)
