The opening track, Dies Irae, is a masterclass in oppressive atmosphere. It moves like a slow burning funeral pyre, carried by chanted vocals that feel less sung and more conjured. These aren't just melodies; they're mantras, whispered and droned from deep within some forgotten tomb. The result is not just sonic, it's spiritual. The guitars hum like a dirge, the percussion beats like ancient war drums echoing through a sacred catacomb.
What makes Dies Irae unique is its refusal to conform to the typical black metal chaos. Faidra has crafted something more ritualistic and monastic and a meditation on death and judgment that evokes awe rather than fury. It’s the sound of a black mass held in the ruins of a ziggurat. It’s reverence in decay.
If traditional black metal is rebellion, Dies Irae is penance.
