🌏 Earth's radiation budget has been out of balance due to anthropogenic emissions, resulting in #GlobalWarming. Recently, the trend has become stronger. Upon invitation by #MPIM scientists, 44 researchers from Europe, Asia, & the US met at Schloss Ringberg 🏰 last week to discuss which processes might be responsible, & to come up with a research program to solve this conundrum. It was an intensive, productive, & enjoyable week – thanks for your hard work & your insightful contributions!✨

🌊 The North Atlantic significantly influences the weather in Europe. 🧊 How stable is Greenland’s ice sheet? New #MPIM research reveals 4️⃣ different steady states of the Greenland #IceSheet under a pre-industrial climate. Using a novel fully-coupled Earth System-Ice Sheet Model, Malena Andernach et al. found a critical threshold of 70-83% of pre-industrial ice volume, below which 50-80% of its current volume would be irreversibly lost even if returning to pre-industrial CO2 concentrations.

🌊 @TatianaIlyina has been appointed director at the MPI for Marine Microbiology in #Bremen! Congratulations on this fantastic success!🎉

From 2010-2026 Tatiana led a research group at #MPIM, simultaneously taking on a professorship at the University of Hamburg #UHH & @hereon in 2023.

We're sad to see her leave, and at the same time we're excited to see the groundbreaking research she is going to conduct in her new role! Here's to an exciting new chapter! 👏

The #MPIM mourns the loss of one of the most influential researchers in its history: Erich Roeckner passed away in February 2026, at the age of 84. He was known as the developer of the ECHAM atmospheric model, which formed the basis for many generations of climate models used at our institute and contributed to all #IPCC assessment reports.
