The National #Transport Authority has begun a phased rollout of contactless fare payments on TFI Local Link services, starting in #Tipperary on 1 December. Passengers can now use bank cards and mobile wallets for single journeys. The move follows a 2023 pilot in #Cavan and #Monaghan and will extend to all 15 Local Link offices by the end of 2026, covering more than 150 routes and about 4 million trips each year. Leap cards, cash and Free Travel Cards will continue to be accepted, with multi-journey products available through the Leap website and app.
The initiative forms part of a wider plan to modernise fare systems across #Ireland through the Next Generation Ticketing programme, which will introduce an account-based system on all Transport for Ireland services. New validators are due from 2027, with full contactless availability expected in 2028. Ministers said the change will improve accessibility and convenience for rural passengers.
