An experimental molten-salt research reactor went critical in 1965, and was operated until 1969.

"China has been quietly reviving this abandoned technology since 2011. Xu said construction of the experimental reactor in the Gobi Desert began in 2018. […] Technical hurdles remain significant": https://www.neimagazine.com/news/china-refuels-thorium-reactor-without-shutdown/

China refuels thorium reactor without shutdown - Nuclear Engineering International

Chinese scientists have refuelled an experimental thorium-fueled molten salt reactor continuously without shutting it down. The Chinese prototype reached full…

"Xu explained that his team had based their design on an experimental reactor that had been built in Tennessee in the nineteen-sixties. Known as the Molten-Salt Reactor Experiment, or the M.S.R.E., that project hit a dead end in the early seventies, when it lost federal funding."

How America Gave China an Edge in Nuclear Power

Though the two countries are now in a race to develop atomic technology, China’s most advanced reactor was the result of collaboration with American scientists, Colin Jones writes.

No hurá! Fluoridovými solemi chlazený reaktor. To je jedna z velmi nadějných technologií.
BTW, jeden z návrhů z Řeže je právě takový typ.

#^NRC approves Hermes construction permit

Kairos Power will build the Hermes molten salt-cooled demonstration reactor at the Heritage Center Industrial Park in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. It is the first non-water cooled reactor to be approved for construction in the USA in more than 50 years.

Moltex believes that storing heat energy in form of molten salt could allow their SMR nuclear to act like a gas peaking plant on the grid. May be the only way to have viable carbon free grid in places like Ontario.

I think this video done by the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in 2018 is a really good and concise explanation of Molten Salt Reactors, how it works, and some of the challenges. A lot of the challenges have been addressed over the last 2 years and shows significant promise.

I'm oversimplifying the opportunities in front of us, but we really need to, as a civilisation, step up and solve the problem.

Most H2 is produced from fossil chemicals. Much of that is produced with Steam Methane Reforming (SMR). In SMR 50% of the H2 is coming from the steam. So if you do chemical mass balance you get 5.5kg CO2/kg H2. This is about 50% of quoted SMR CO2 emissions. The other 50% is coming from burning fossil fuel to make steam and provide process heat. What would happen if concentrated solar or molten salt nuclear heat was used instead?

Alvin Weinberg pioneered this idea for nuclear power in 1960s. A pilot #MoltenSaltReactor was built and operated at Oak Ridge Lab for a number of years but never ran on Thorium. Several #SMR designs are derivatives from that idea including Canada’s Terrestrial Energy. Hopefully in the west we come up with a competitive design before China dominates

Operating permit issued for Chinese molten salt reactor

The Shanghai Institute of Applied Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences has been granted an operating licence for the experimental TMSR-LF1 thorium-powered molten-salt reactor, construction of which started in Wuwei city, Gansu province, in September 2018.;
