T.J. CrowderExplain it to me like I'm five: Why does being a former and incipient President of the United States give you a complete pass on punishment for state felonies unrelated to the office? A suspension of punishment while in office, fine, but an unconditional discharge? I didn't understand this in the lead-up when Merchan signalled there would be no punishment, and I'm none the wiser now.

NonilexThe outcome was expected: Last week, in an 18-page decision, Justice #Merchan said that he planned to give #Trump an #UnconditionalDischarge, writing that it “appears to be the most viable solution to ensure finality.”
Trump, who was convicted of 34 felony counts of falsifying business records to cover up a sex scandal, had originally faced probation or up to 4 years in prison, & Justice Merchan had ample ground to consider incarceration.
