MAGMML3 #241 - The Show Must Go On (For A Long Time)

Day 12 of #Arttrober is Zero from the Mega Man videogames (specifically the X and Zero subseries).

I remember Zero from Mega Man X, where he rescues X in the prologue and generally acts like a cooler and haughtier version of X—but red and with a ponytail. There's probably more to his character than that. I only played a couple of Mega Man games, and wasn't especially good at them.

Finished Mega Man 1 in the Wily Wars. I've played all of the Mega Man games on NES many times over, but the Wily Wars is different enough that all my muscle memory is just slightly off. Combine that with MM1 being an overall frustrating game (those stupid moving platforms in Ice Man and Wily 1 stages are my least favourite segments of the series) and I wouldn't say I entirely enjoyed this one. #MegaMan #SegaGenesjs #shareyourgames
Knock of Mega Man 2 as well. Difficulty on this one is all over the place. Muscle memory was my biggest foe here, but there was some odd stuff, like differences in weapon damage, bosses moving at different speed, etc. Quick Man is hilariously slow in this version.

@scribblemacher The Wily Wars has some trade-offs, for certain. My biggest obstacles were that Mega Man is larger, but MM1 Wily Stage 1 wasn't adjusted during the mandatory Magnet Beam section and MM2 Wily Stage 1 when you must use Item 1 to get to the ladder. There's not much room for error, and I ended up using the Genesis Mini's save states. Also, MM1's weapon energy pick-ups before that Magnet Beam segment and before Wily Machine do not reappear like they do on NES. At least MM1 controls far less slippery than on NES.

But Wily Tower is the real attraction. Not every weapon gets to shine (poor, poor Super Arm), but you can mix and match weapons and utilities from 3 different games, or choose as little as 1 utility to challenge each stage.

@JTO_is_Typing I had a surprising amount of trouble with Wily 1 in MM1. I had trouble using magnet beam in the small space near the end, ran out, and found the refill doesn't respawn. After dying to get back to some enemies, I found crossing that stupid spike pit much harder. The original design of this section stinks anyway.

Wily 1 didn't give me too much trouble in MM2 didn't give me much trouble. I had more trouble with the Wily 4 boss. I knew how to beat it, but the slightly bigger mega man was harder to move through the tight jumps needed to beat it without dying to refill crash. That was the only part I used e-tanks.

I like this game overall. My first experience with it was the PAL version on a crappy emulator circa early 2000s. Playing the NTSC version on actual hardware made a world of difference (though it is still too slow in general).

@scribblemacher Oh, was this the Retro-Bit cartridge? I heard that one fixed some of the slowdown by hiding the score counter at times in MM1. I think I heard about that cartridge from this ROM hack, which also includes a speed increase for mega buster shots.

@JTO_is_Typing yeah, the Retrobit version. It is definitely not as slow as the PAL version, but there's still quite a bit of slowdown when there are multiple sprites up. Using wood leaf on those pencil things in Wily 2 brought it to its knees!

There is also the version from the Genesis Mini. I'd be curious what rom is used for Switch Online. I would just assume that whatever was distributed via Sega channel is lost to time at this point.
