I spent some quality time with the pond frogs and their abundant tadpoles yesterday. It's a small pond, and definitely shrunk in this week's warmth, but it'll fill back up later this week when the rain starts back up. Plenty of water for the babies to grow in.

This is the seasonal pond that soaks up all the water that's not flooding my apartment right now. By late summer, it's just a dry depression in the ground, ready to be refilled, but three quarters of the year, it's water, providing vital habitat and keeping us safe from both flood and drought. Wetlands are the absolute best.

Bright sunny day, but very windy, and the wind carries with it the message that winter is returning. I went into the woods, and found shelter. After all, shelter is integral to our relationship with the woods; they have cared for us since time immemorial, and we should return the favour.

There is a pond - I don't suppose #pondstodon or #mastopond are hashtags in use - providing a haven for ducks and, in summer, many an insect.

BTW, I am now determined to make #mastopond a thing. If you have any pictures or posts about a body of water smaller than a lake, but bigger than a puddle, do join in.
Interesting find at the farm today. This looks like a red-legged frog egg mass, but it's way too early, months early, for them to be breeding here. I have it on good authority that it's either that or a weirdly large mass of an earlier breeder like chorus frog. Any frog folks have a better guess? (Coast range of Oregon, taken today, Dec. 28) Either way, I'll be keeping a closer eye on the pond over the next few weeks.
