Greater Yellowlegs in Flight
Merlin told me this was a lesser yellowlegs, but a greater authority @kcscrimshaw said that the area saw very few lesser. So, doing what any curious bird enthusiast would do, I ignored all pressing and meaningful responsibilities to learn the differences between yellowlegs in flight. Apparently, the easiest sign is the slight neck bulge. A lesser has a shorter neck such that it is completely streamlined. This is either a greater yellowlegs, or a lesser on steroids.

Snowy Egret Hunting Under a Bridge: Snowy Egrets make such fun photography subjects! Their stark white form against the background of their often dark hunting spots give them such a flair, and their dramatic hunting poses make them look as if they are hamming for the camera. #egret #snowyegret #sandiego #california #birds #birdwatching #birdphotography #nature #naturephotography #wildlife #wildlifephotography #natgeo #vogel #oiseau #shorebirds #oiseaux #marshbirds #natgeowildlife
White Crowned Sparrow: I used to avoid photographs with human-made objects "interfering" with nature (or, the rest of nature, as we are animals too), but I have really done a 180. This weathered chain link fence, for example, matches the natural background to offer a bit of camouflage for our friend and provides a nice perch. The fence's purpose is to help maintain clean waterways for local wildlife. With our increasingly aggressive takeover of wild spaces, I have come to relish the small spaces in which humans and other animals improve each other's environment. #urbannature #urbanbiodiversity #suburbanbirds #birding #birds #sandiego #birdwatching #birdphotography #nature #naturephotography #wildlife #wildlifephotography #natgeo #vogel #oiseau #shorebirds #oiseaux #marshbirds #natgeowildlife #sparrow #whitecrownedsparrow
Some more featured creatures from last Friday's visit to the Marine Nature Study Area in Oceanside, NY. Short summer, this one. Soon, the species shown here will will be migrating, although some Clapper Rails stick around all winter.

Today was a Saltmarsh Sparrow kind of day at the Marine Nature Study Area in Oceanside, NY. I was very happy to see that these endangered birds produced many surviving offspring this summer.

Salties are iconic salt marsh birds, restricted to these habitats along the U.S. east coast. They are also iconic for the biodiversity crisis, since they are threatened with extinction as a result of the double whammy of habitat loss and sea-level increase, all driven by never-ending capitalist growth. MNSA backs up to suburban residences, so as the sea level rises, they will literally have nowhere to go at this site.

On this occasion, maybe four or five Salties (adults and juvies) were playing hard to get, flushed out of some Phragmites along the path every time someone walked by, diving into the Spartina further in, and then returning within a short time, but never perching. Then this adult and a friend came quite close, perching tranquilly on this concrete ledge for a few minutes.
