It’s amazing to be connected to this legacy in a new way now. The National Air and Space Museum is undergoing a monumental multi-year renovation, which began in 2018. This exhibition hall, which opened in 1976, at the height of the United States Bicentennial festivities under the leadership of Michael Collins, who had flown to the Moon on Apollo 11. Seeing machines like the Spirit of St. Louis simply parked just out of reach, instead of hung up and away in the rafters gives you a different perspective.
