ok first of all happy new year! I purposely delayed posting this to hopefully give time for heads to cool down.

For anyone out of the loop (heh), @dansup, the creator of loops and pixelfed, went on a petty tirade over some criticism to one of his ideas by a potential collaborator, including abusing his position as a moderator. As someone in a similar position to her this gives me some pause with putting work into this project as well.

The reason I jumped on this project is because a silly little video app is something I really want. I have a soft spot in my heart for TikTok despite it's many flaws. For that reason I will continue to explore how I can contribute to this space. But I'll step away from building something that directly interfaces with loops.video at least until the power dynamics are more distributed. I am exploring building my own thing that may or may not pan out. If anyone wants to collaborate on this one other things feel free to reach out.

@dansup if you wish to rebuild trust I offer this advice, you can take it or leave it.

  • Work to get other people to moderate loops.video. Step down from making any moderation decisions yourself. It's becoming more and more clear to me there's like only a couple people in the world that can actually handle both the technical and social aspects of building a community. This is a wider problem on fedi by the way.
  • Can you cool it on the over promising? It became immediately clear that I couldn't trust you to follow through. I know being a hype man is important for building interest and acquiring investments but it's hurting your trust and is part of the reason we are even in this mess.

    You may have noticed my fedi apps are currently closed source. This is intentional. Nothing is set in stone but I'm leaning towards an open core closed shell model. In other words while the apps themselves are closed source I'll be spending time sharing as much code as possible for others to build cool stuff on top of. I already have 3 open source projects that have come out of this work and likely more to come! #bloofy #loopless

    #loopless and #loops clients are both failing to upload videos. Loopless provides a more verbose error message.

    The #loopless client is a more intuitive experience than the #loops Android client at the moment. I would love to see some friendly competition between them. Loopless is showing some real potential!

    those of you mentioning Obtainium thanks! Taken a look at it has a lot of overlap with my ideas about better app distribution. Might be some good synergies there stay tuned! #loopless

    my loops app is called loopless because the videos don't loop. I've always hated that behavior and was a big driver on why I started working on this lol. will probably add a setting to enable looping for the weirdos out there that do like it.
