Inside the Liberal Party’s ‘existential crisis’

If someone is not a socialist at age 20, goes an old political maxim, they have no heart. If they are not a conservative by 40, they have no head. It points to a general truism that people tend to become more conservative with age. Political scientists such as Professor Ian McAllister of the Australian National University call this progression rightwards across the political spectrum the “life-cycle effect”.
