Day 7 - Imani (Faith)

In the face of injustice, it is easy to give up. The hard thing is seeing the problems of this world, and still getting out of bed each day to fight them.
We must have faith that change can come and that our actions have meaning. By working together, being creative, respecting ourselves and using our money wisely, we can make change in our lives and in the world.
Today's affirmation is about faith.

Day 6 - Kuumba (Creativity)

New Years Eve is a time to party and forget your troubles before the start of the new year. In Kwanzaa, it is time for Karamu Ya Imani (Feast of Faith). The value, Kuumba, should be demonstrated by crafts, music, and fun with the purpose to leave our community more beautiful and beneficial than we inherited it.
In the spirit of Kuumba, for Today's affirmation I will tell a Nancy story. Special thanks to @FreakyFwoof who contributed music.

Day 5 - Nia (Purpose)

Its been 400 years since the start of the slave trade so people have had a very long time to vilify other people because of their skin color. Antiblackness has spread across the globe, and dark-skinned people are judged by others as soon as they are seen.
Changing that will take a long time.
I've been thinking of writing stories where that isn't the case. #Solarpunk stories. Finding a purpose can be something very small, but every little bit helps.

Day 4 - Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics)

Billionaires are people who make so much money that they could feed the entire country (though they don't), and not even make a dent in their income.
Much of their money comes from people like us.
Ever wonder if there was another way?
Buying from smaller stores and working with your neighbors is a way to keep money local.
Today's affirmation is about this.

Day 3 - Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility)

I was heartened to hear how people self organized to help warn immigrants about kidnappings by blowing whistles and walking their children to school.

Unfortunately kidnapping of children are all too common in the history of African Americans, as when a 14 year old child named Emmett Till was kidnapped and killed apparently for talking to a white woman in 1955.

Today we talk about how working together helps everyone.

Day 2 - Kugichagulia (Self-Determination)

You only have to look at the Trans rights discourse to realize that many people think they have the right to determine who other people are.

Kugichagulia says that we are the ones who define who we are. Historically black peoples have been labeled, insulted, discounted. The first step in opposing those who would oppress us is to respect and name ourselves.

Here is today's affirmation.

Day 1 - Umoja (Unity)

The first day of Kwanzaa asks us to consider the concept of UNITY.

Alone you are just one person, but if you join together with others you can get many things done.

When we UNITE with others, we can make it through. Listen to today's Kwanzaa message about UNITY.
