Kingston Grist Mill in Fresh Snow

The hard line where red clapboard meets white accumulation. The boundary between frozen millpond and moving water beneath. I'd gone out that morning for birds along the Delaware and Raritan Canal—long lens, specific intent. But after I'd finished near Carnegie Lake Dam, at the car I swapped the XF150-600mm for the XF27mm and went back to Kingston Grist Mill. The snow had transformed the woods that enveloped Heathcote Brook. That barn-red siding, usually just pleasant, now demanded my […]

The bodies were dug up and the dead were re-interred in Linn Cemetery, about as far away as you could get from Anderston and still remain within the city. Only two of the grave monunents were also moved. The rest were presumably discarded, meaning the vast majority of Anderston's dead now lie in an single large unmarked plot (bottom photo), stripped of all reminders of the lives they once lived.

In the 1960s, Glasgow Corporation set about constructing the Kingston Bridge to carry the new M8 motorway over Clyde (top photo and map). To clear the way for it, much of the centre of Anderston was obliterated. This included the Anderston Old Parish Church, establised in 1770, and its substantial surrounding graveyards (bottom map, outlined in red; the current view of this location is shown in the top photo).

Looking east towards what was, until the 1960s, Anderston Cross in Glasgow. Between 1951 and 1971, the population of Anderston dropped from 31,902 to just 9,235 as the area was redeveloped under the guise of the Anderston Comprehensive Development Area. This included the loss of Anderston Cross and much of the surrounding areas of tenements and workshops under the M8, the Kingston Bridge and the Clydeside Expressway.

The former Washington Street Public School in Glasgow. Designed by Henry E. Clifford and built in 1889, it was home to Anderston Primary School until the Kingston Bridge was built in the 1970s. One of the on-ramps for the bridge passes within a few metres of the upper floors of the building, and it now lies empty with its playground used as a car park.

As well as this community mosaic, there is an official memorial plaque on the banks of the Clyde near the Kingston Bridge and a tomb where those who were killed are laid to rest in the city's Necropolis.

If you've ever driven across the Kingston Bridge, you'll be familiar with this statue, but it hasn't always been there. Originally created by James Alexander Ewing in 1897, when it was removed in 1996, it fell apart as the concrete it was made from crumbled. In 2016, a replica made by Kenny MacKay was replaced on the building due to the efforts of Bill Ritchie.
