Junkanoo were a percussive band from Christchurch who put out a split album release on Campbell McLay's Onset/Offset label in 1986, recorded at Arne van Bussell's Nightshift Studios. The name 'Junkanoo' stems from a festival that was originated during the period of African chattel slavery in British American colonies.

Originally released by #AnslemDouglas (titled "Doggie"), it was covered by producer Jonathan King who sang it under the name Fat Jakk and his Pack of Pets. He brought the song to the attention of his friend #SteveGreenberg, who then had the Baha Men cover the song. The song, released on 26 July 2000, became the band's first and only hit in the United Kingdom and the United States.

otts at work@nadinestorying @BlackMastodon We have this in The Bahamas too! We spell it “Junkanoo”. Growing up, it happened on Boxing Day and New Year’s. But to appeal to tourists year-round, it happens more often these days, mostly behind the walled gardens of mega resorts. Last I heard, they wanted it to coincide/be more of (?) a Carnival thing, which Bahamians did NOT want to do.
