Undici anni e mezzo di carcere per duplice omicidio stradale aggravato dalla fuga. È la condanna inflitta dal Tribunale di Roma a Francesco Moretti per la morte delle due studentesse belghe Wibe Bijls e Jessy Dewildeman, travolte e uccise l’8 ottobre 2022 sulla diramazione per L’Aquila del Gra. Quella sera le due ventenni, in Italia da pochi giorni per una vacanza, si erano fermate per prestare soccorso a un automobilista coinvolto in un precedente incidente. In quel momento sopraggiunse l’auto guidata da Moretti, che viaggiava con patente sospesa e sotto l’effetto di sostanze stupefacenti. L’impatto fu fatale. Dopo averle investite, l’uomo abbandonò la vettura sul ciglio della strada e si allontanò a piedi, nel buio delle campagne circostanti.
La sentenza
I giudici della X sezione penale hanno riconosciuto la responsabilità piena dell’imputato, condannandolo a 11 anni e sei mesi e disponendo anche tre anni di libertà vigilata. Una decisione accolta con commozione dai familiari delle vittime presenti in aula. “Crediamo che sia una sentenza corretta e giusta. È molto importante che sia stato affermato che non c’è il concorso di colpa di Wibe e Jessy”, hanno dichiarato. Per il legale di parte civile, Domenico Musicco, si tratta di “una condanna storica, una delle più pesanti dall’entrata in vigore della legge sull’omicidio stradale”. Secondo l’avvocato, la sentenza “riconosce in modo netto la responsabilità dell’imputato” e certifica la “colpa totale” dell’investitore. Particolarmente duro il giudizio sul comportamento processuale di Moretti: “Non c’è stato pentimento. A distanza di anni non ha mostrato di voler chiedere scusa alle famiglie e fino all’ultimo ha tentato di sfuggire alle sue responsabilità, arrivando perfino a negare l’investimento o ad attribuirlo ad altri veicoli inesistenti”.

At that moment, Moretti’s car arrived, which he was driving with a suspended license and under the influence of drugs. The impact was fatal. After hitting them, the man abandoned the vehicle on the side of the road and fled on foot into the surrounding countryside darkness.
The verdict
The judges of the X Criminal Section recognized the full responsibility of the defendant, sentencing him to 11 years and six months and also ordering three years of probation. A decision welcomed with emotion by the families of the victims present in court. “We believe it is a correct and just sentence. It is very important that it has been stated that there was no fault on the part of Wibe and Jessy,” they declared. For the civil party lawyer, Domenico Musicco, this is “a historical condemnation, one of the most severe since the enactment of the law on vehicular manslaughter.” According to the lawyer, the sentence “clearly recognizes the responsibility of the defendant” and certifies the “total guilt” of the driver. Particularly harsh was the judgment on Moretti’s procedural conduct: “There was no remorse. At a distance of years he did not show a desire to apologize to the families and until the last he attempted to evade his responsibilities, even going so far as to deny the impact or to attribute it to non-existent vehicles.”
