According to Talia Stroud, "one of the reasons news avoidance occurs is that “they’re not talking about the issues that affect [people] in their day-to-day lives and their neighborhoods.”

ISOJ panelists discuss the current state of growing news avoidance and what journalists can do about it – International Symposium on Online Journalism

On building a more diverse newsroom: “Doing that means investing in the capacity to bring people on, often at an earlier stage in their career, and offering them the opportunity to grow, and to learn, and to try different things...It’s not only bringing people in, it’s creating the culture that incentivizes them to stay." Joe Kahn, Executive editor, New York Times #ISOJ2023

Aimee Rinehart, The Associated Press:

Generative AI can help local and smaller newsrooms with basic flow of information. Since they are smaller, they also have more freedom to experiment with these tools compared to larger newsrooms. #ISOJ2023

Jeremy Gilbert, Digital Media Strategy, Northwestern University:

The question of AI tools replacing real journalists is not a relevant question at the moment. Right now is the time to experiement with AI and find out how it can help journalists and newsrooms serve their audience better. #ISOJ2023

If someone asked ChatGPT these questions directly, the AI tool may fabricate the answers, since it's a language-based tool (as opposed to fact-based). This new recommendation of AI built into news sites would give live, fact-based answers to audience questions. #ISOJ2023

Sam Han, The Washington Post:

Newsrooms can use AI to reach audiences in different ways. Example: a chatbot answering questions about election coverage on a news website based on live data (newsrooms would provide data - it would then be crafted into natural language by the chatbot) #ISOJ2023

How can journalism incorporate AI, including generative tools like ChatGPT and Bard, to improve production and distribution of news?

Can we train an AI to make editorial decisions that value what we value? @[email protected] at #ISOJ2023
I remain highly suspicious of the word “storytelling”--it’s a magical word that (in the arts, at least) is used almost exclusively in a solutionist context (“how will we be more relevant for audiences? more storytelling!”). Listening to the #AI panel here at #ISOJ2023, I wonder if #ChatGPT will flood the zone with so much storytelling that it will cease to feel like a “solution” to structural problems.
