This is the second of a series of works I’m creating at the moment. They’re ink abstracts (though with a touch of acrylic paint in this one), on speciality, handmade papers.

This is a reasonably heavy Indian paper. Future pieces will be on a variety of Himalayan papers made from different plant fibres.

With each I look for a way to apply and spread ink that honours and enhances each sheet of paper’s unique qualities.

This one is approx. 60cm x 80cm, with beautiful rough edges to the paper.

I’m still experimenting creating abstracts with ink. What else is the downtime of Christmas/New Year for if not to refresh, refocus, revive?

So I’m playing.

I made this over a few hours yesterday afternoon, listening to Simeon ten Holt’s ‘Canto Ostinato’ for 4 pianos.

When I looked at it this morning, it had dried in ways I like a lot. I’m not certain it’s finished though.

I suspect it might want a little line work in there to help refine the shape.

I’ll sit with a while and see what it asks of me.

In the quietness of Christmas Day I experimented. This is an abstract in acrylic ink. A2 Paper (42cm x 60cm) - and a little away from my usual ‘calm’ approach. I did a second one at the same time, but looking at it this morning, it feels unfinished.

This one though, I like. There’s a wildness in it.

Here’s a couple of studies I did last night, trying very hard to leave them alone before doing too much. Learning to trust that enough is enough.
