A new (and vastly improved) version of my #InDesign #incunabulum.

I just typeset an #incunabulum in #InDesign! I used the “Missaali” font by Tommi Syrjänen, available at https://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/fonts/missaali/, which is in roughly the same style as Gutenberg’s #blackletter. The text comes from the opening of Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa’s “De occulta philosophia libri III” (1533).

I took great care to make the text colour as even as possible, by turning discretionary ligatures off and on wherever appropriate.

I especially enjoyed creating page 4, which contains poetry.

#OnThisDay in #book #history in 1477 - perhaps the very FIRST book was printed in #English / #England. Published by William Caxton, the Dictes and Sayings of the Philosophers is a Middle English #incunabulum (early book). It was originally Arabic, and was translated from the French by Anthony Woodville, brother of Queen Elizabeth Woodville. Anthony and Caxton published together in Bruges while in exile. Anthony was later executed by Richard III in 1483.

Yesterday in an online club session (Christmas edition) of ESV Rot-Weiß #Göttingen #chess I talked about the #Lucena #incunabulum [#Valencia, Spain, 1497] and its Latin excerpt in the @subugoe. Unfortunately no Lucena position, but a smothered mate. #ChessHistory #GamesHistory
