🎓 Congratulations to Constanze Reinken on successfully defending her #PhD! 👏

In her thesis, “A Stochastic Approach to Modelling Thermokarst Lake Dynamics,” Constanze investigated the behavior of #permafrost lakes. She developed a stochastic model based on the karst-like expansion, merging, & drainage of lakes, identifying multiple regimes that correspond to different geographical settings.

We’re proud of your achievement and wish you all the best for your next steps! ✨

👏🎓 Congratulations to Zoi Kourkouraidou, who just defended her #PhD thesis “Uncovering the effects of Agulhas eddies on low and high internal tide modes and their energetics in high‑resolution ICON.” 🌊🌀
Her work reveals how eddies generated by the Agulhas current scatter low‑mode internal tides into higher modes, driving energy dissipation & mixing—insights gained using the #ICON‑O model at 5km resolution.

Well done, Zoi! 💃 Wishing you great success in the next chapter!

👏🎓 Congratulations to Jacqueline Behncke, who just defended her doctoral thesis entitled “The Role of Sailboats in Advancing our Understanding of the Ocean Carbon Sink.” 🌊⛵
Her work shows how data from sailing teams, like those led by Boris Herrmann, can transform our knowledge of how the ocean absorbs carbon. Science under sail!

🎓 Last week, our #IMPRS_ESM doctoral candidates gathered in Fintel, Lower Saxony, for their annual retreat! Over three days, the talented young scientists engaged in inspiring discussions, presented their research, and collaborated on innovative projects to address the pressing challenges of #ClimateScience. 🌍 We're grateful to our organizers and participants for making this event a resounding success!

Looking for something cool to do in #Hamburg on the upcoming long weekend? ⚓️ How about visiting the "Breaking the Surface" exhibition at the International Maritime Museum? The #MPIM Social Media team recently went & was inspired by these women, many of whom we know personally (e.g. #MPI_scientist Jin-Song von Storch & Johanna Baehr, deputy head of #IMPRS_ESM). Make sure to visit before the end of the year or check out the website: www.breaking-the-surface.com

☁️Stratocumulus clouds reflect incoming solar radiation & cool the Earth’s surface. Microphysical processes in these clouds are relevant for making accurate projections of our future climate. 💦Using high-resolution simulations, our #IMPRS_ESM member Raphael Pistor & Juan Pedro Mellado from #UHH investigated how water droplet size affects cloud lifetimes and found that droplet sedimentation is just as important as turbulence. 📖 https://doi.org/10.1029/2025MS004966

🚨 New publication!
🎓Our IMPRS-ESM doctoral candidate Doseok Lee just published his first paper in npj Climate and Atmospheric Science together with Hanjun Kim and #MPIM Director Sarah Kang.

💧☁️ Enhanced clear-sky shortwave absorption by water vapor accelerates #AMOC recovery 🌊 → higher long-term #ClimateSensitivity.
