A monoscene can be one of the most challenging and rewarding forms to try. Inspired by earlier forms and shows from Chicago in the 90’s and codified in New York in the 00’s, the form is much more than one long scene. Like other improv forms, it’s a collection of scenes that create meaning and themes from juxtaposition and contrast. But it does so with some important restrictions. All the scenes must take place in the same location in the same slice of time. No edits, no time jumps. Like a great one act play, characters enter, exit and return in real time. The show evolves each time a new combination of characters takes the stage.
This workshop will be taught by Kevin Mullaney, former Artistic Director of the UCB Theatre in NYC, and former teacher at IO Theater. He directed the first monoscene at the UCB Theatre with the Swarm.

Why would we not want others to behave exactly the way we want them to at all times?
Firstly, trying to control others' behaviour makes us manipulative. Secondly, having others around us who think and act differently is ESSENTIAL for our emotional, social, and spiritual growth.
That's where learning how to play well with others comes in. 😉
