Giant deep-sea vent tubeworm symbionts use two carbon fixation pathways to grow at record speeds

New research sheds light on how the two carbon fixation pathways of the deep-sea tubeworm Riftia pachyptila are coordinated, revealing a sophisticated adaptation that allows these symbionts to thrive in their dynamic and harsh environment.

#SquatLobsters Guide Scientists To New #Hydrothermal Vent Field https://schmidtocean.org/squat-lobsters-guide-scientists-to-new-hydrothermal-vent-field/

"Scientists have discovered a new #HydrothermalVent field... when a Galatheid #crab, also known as a #SquatLobster, came into view. The number of #crabs grew until the #scientists finally arrived on the vent field and were excited to find giant #TubeWorms nestled around the hot water. The Ecuadorian observers onboard the vessel named the vent field Sendero del Cangrejo: Trail of the Crabs.”

Inside the Nerve-Racking Dive to an Active Submarine Volcano

The chief pilot of a deep-sea submersible recounts exploring Loihi, which will become Hawaii’s next island.
“Should we go see the sharks?” Terry Kerby asked, treading water beneath the Makai Research Pier. This was a rhetorical question. Of course we were going to see the sharks.

"A team of international #scientists have discovered a new deep-sea #octopus nursery at a low-temperature #HydrothermalVent offshore of #CostaRica. The discovery of the brooding site brings the world’s known octopus nurseries to three... Additionally, the expedition reinforced the idea that some species of deep-sea octopus seek out low-temperature #HydrothermalVents for brooding their eggs."

Unlike Sasquatch and the Himalayan Yeti, the marine yeti is a blonde. The yeti crab never sees the light of day--It lives in an ecosystem disconnected from the photosynthetic world above. The setose chelipeds are covered with filamentous bacteria, which it eats (it is not clear if this is its sole diet, or just a component). It sort of 'farms' these chemosynthetic bacteria on its body to eat. A human farmer who did that would have trouble selling their harvest. . .
